Struggling to Get Started With Your Health & Wellness? This Micro Habit Is the Kickstart You Need

What if I told you that committing to drinking one glass of water first thing in the morning could set you up for success when creating new habits? Sounds too easy, right?

Well, here’s a secret for you: too easy is exactly where you should be starting. When working with me, you’ll often find we break down your weekly goals to ensure they feel easy enough to follow through with.

Don’t get me wrong—your overall vision and aspirations can be as lofty and wild as your imagination allows—but the steps that get you there should feel manageable. Spoiler alert: this is what makes the journey fun and sets you up for success.

So, What Happens When You Commit to Drinking a Glass of Water Every Morning?

Aside from the obvious physical benefits that hydration provides (see more in my hydration blog), I want you to know about the deeper shifts happening when you commit to a daily ritual like this.

  1. By following through on your commitments to yourself first thing in the morning before the day starts you are setting the tone for the rest of the day. You’re sending your brain a message as soon as you wake: “I prioritise myself today. My health is important. I am important.”

  2. Because this habit feels too easy and generally speaking can be completed in 99% of scenarios you are giving yourself the opportunity to practice showing up for yourself consistently. When starting out, consistency is more important than the action itself. We can build on habits, but showing up each day is a muscle that needs to be trained.

  3. The Magic Part: your subconscious brain doesn’t care about whether you’re following through with drinking a glass of water each morning or running a 5k at 6 am before work. All it does is register whether you follow through or not. It then uses this information and applies it to future scenarios. Either making it harder or easier for you to stick to your goals. This is why, when we’ve tried and ‘failed’ many times in the past, it can feel so hard to get going again—our subconscious replays the story: “I don’t succeed at what I set out to do.”

So, to summarise: committing to a small daily ritual first thing in the morning will set the tone for your day, help you practise consistency, and reprogramme your subconscious to make following through on future goals easier.

Want to Give This a Try? Here’s How to Get the Most Benefit From This Practice:

  1. Repeat the commitment to yourself before going to bed

  2. Have a visible reminder somewhere you’ll see it first thing in the morning

  3. Track your progress to keep yourself accountable and see how well you’re doing

  4. Notice how you FEEL every time you follow through

  5. Journal or jot down notes in your phone about the positive ripple effects this habit has on your day

I’d love to hear how this worked out for you in the comments.
