You Don’t Need Another 7 Step Morning Routine, Try These Simple Habits Instead…

Every year when 1st Jan comes around, we’re feeling fed up with sitting on the sofa watching re-runs of Harry Potter and eating the leftover Quality Street nobody really likes.

We start craving movement, vegetables, and feel the pull to completely reinvent ourselves for the year ahead.

I’m here to tell you: you don’t need a complete overhaul of your routine to feel refreshed, re-energised, and motivated. You just need a few small tweaks that will turn into big shifts over time.

Here Are My 3 Quick Wins That Pack a Punch (If a Full Overhaul Feels Daunting)

🎶 Music & dancing in the morning

Why it works: More oxytocin and lower cortisol? Yes please. Singing along to music you love—or that matches your mood—is a powerful way to boost how you feel.

How to make it easy: Pair it with something you already do every morning—showering, making a cuppa, or getting dressed.

Bonus points: Get the rest of your household involved. Singing together maximises those feel-good benefits.

💧 A glass of water on waking

Why it works: Hydration has a whole host of benefits, especially first thing in the morning (see more in my hydration blog - please link). But beyond that, starting your day with a simple act of self-care sends a powerful message to your subconscious: “I’m worth looking after.” Over time, this makes building new habits feel easier.

How to make it easy: Keep a bottle of water somewhere you’ll see it first thing, so you hydrate before you caffeinate.

Bonus points: Make it mindful. Tune out the noise of the day ahead and focus on this small, nourishing ritual to create a sense of calm before things begin.

✍️ 3 things you’re grateful for each night

Why it works: This simple habit can help lower cortisol before bed, making it easier to fall asleep. Over time, it also trains your brain to notice more positivity in your day.

How to make it easy: Keep a small notepad and pen by your bed.

Bonus points: Turn it into a shared practice with loved ones for added connection (and a little extra oxytocin).

If you’re looking to make more targeted changes this year, here are a few questions to get you started:

Key Questions to Ask Yourself When Creating Change

Why are you doing this?
When you connect to the deeper meaning behind your goals, you can return to it when motivation dips.

Does it bring you joy?
Joy is key to consistency. We want more joy and less restriction or punishment.

What’s the path of least resistance?
Make it as easy as possible to show up for yourself. Focus on consistency first—you can build intensity over time.
